LIGHT,PANEL

A light specifically designed to be mounted on, near, or through a panel, switchboard, bulletin board, cowl, dashboard, and the like, and specifically designed to provide direct or indirect illumination thereon. It must include a shade, reflector, or other special device to direct illumination or to provide for the direction of illumination through the inherent design of the item, as in lights for edge lighted panels. It may include filters, dimming features, switches, and/or flexible gooseneck. For aircraft installed items prviding illumination for map reading or general utility illumination, in addition to panel illumination, see LIGHT (1), COCKPIT, AIRCRAFT. For items conforming to this basic definition with the additional feature of providing illuminated indication of a specific nature concerning the circuit in which it is inserted, see LIGHT (1), INDICATOR.

SHADE,LAMP

An item used to diminish or to intercept the light from a lamp in certain directions where such light is not desirable. Does not include items with reflective inner surface. Excludes GLOBE, ELECTRIC LIGHT.

ADAPTER,LIGHT REFLECTOR

LIGHT,INDICATOR

A light, with mounting facilities furnished, designed to convey information of a specific nature concerning the circuit in which inserted. Must include or provide for the use of a lens as a part of it. For items without a lens, see LAMPHOLDER, and also see LIGHT (1), PANEL.

EXTENSION,LAMPHOLDER

An item specifically designed to extend the length of a lampholder when smaller lamps are used in fixture or reflector designed for larger size lamps. For items that adapt lamp bases to lampholders, see ADAPTER, LAMPHOLDER.

FIXTURE,LIGHTING

An item consisting of one or more lampholder(s) or other electrical connection, designed to provide general illumination. May include a shade, light window, switch and the like. Do not use if a more specific item name exists,such as LIGHT (as modified).

FLOODLIGHT,ELECTRIC

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is designed to project a broad beam of light for relatively even illumination over a wide area. It must include reflector(s) and mounting facilities and may include accessories. Excludes items which can be adjusted to function as a SEARCHLIGHT or a SPOTLIGHT. See also SEARCHLIGHT; SPOTLIGHT and LIGHT, PHOTOGRAPHIC.

SPOTLIGHT

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is designed to project a sharply defined conical beam of light for high intensity illumination of a relatively nearby object(s). Includes items which can be adjusted to function as a FLOODLIGHT, ELECTRIC. See also FLOODLIGHT, ELECTRIC; LIGHT, PHOTOGRAPHIC and SEARCHLIGHT.

SHIELD,LIGHT,ELECTROSTATIC

An item designed to be placed in front of or around a light for the purpose of shielding against electrical interference.

CONTROL,NAVIGATIONAL LIGHT

A device which determines the mode of operation of navigational lights or light systems.

CONTROL,ELECTRIC LIGHT

An item specifically designed to remotely control the intensity and/or the on-off operation of a light or lights used for general illumination. May be manually operated and/or actuated by the degree of surrounding light intensity or sound vibration. Do not use for autotransformers, rheostats, or switches which are used without the addition of other parts to accomplish this function.

LIGHT SET,NAVIGATIONAL

The items and components required to operate a complete navigational light system. May include operating spares, cable assemblies, and power sources. See also LIGHT, BEACON LIGHT NAVIGATIONAL, AIRCRAFT and LIGHT, NAVIGATIONAL, MARINE.

SLEEVE,PANEL LIGHT

A cylinder whose ratio of axial length to the outside diameter is four to one or greater and which is used with a panel light.

HOLDER,ELECTRIC LIGHT GLOBE

Does not include items with lampholders.

An item consisting of concentric or parallel vanes used to intercept and redirect the light from, and to prevent undesirable glare from a lamp.

LIGHT ASSEMBLY,INDICATOR

An item designed to convey information of a specific nature concerning the circuit in which inserted. Consists of two or more LIGHT, INDICATOR.

GUARD,LAMP

An open framework fabricated of rigid material designed to protect a light source from external damage. It may also protect the lighting fixture. May include reflector. Excludes SHIELD, LIGHT, ELECTROSTATIC.

CASE,LIGHT SET

A case designed to hold a light set or a part thereof. See also CASE, LAMP.

HANGER,LIGHTING FIXTURE

An item designed to suspend a lighting fixture from a conduit fitting or other wiring facility. Do not use for flexible conduit assembly designed to function as a hanger.

FILTER,SIGNAL LIGHT

A transparent item which is used with a signal light for the purpose of altering the color, or polarizing the light.

GLOBE,ELECTRIC LIGHT

An item of clear or diffusing material which incloses the light source and is specifically designed to be used with a FIXTURE, LIGHTING or other general illumination device, such as LIGHT, FLOOR and LIGHT, DESK.

REFLECTOR,LIGHT

An opaque item for a light source with an inside surface of high polish or luster designed to confine, reflect and redirect light rays in a specific area or direction. Does not include lampholder. For combination guard and reflector, see GUARD, LAMP.

LIGHT,TRAFFIC,AIRCRAFT

A hand-held light specifically designed to project a beam of light, usually colored, for the prime purpose of regulating and directing airborne and ground aircraft traffic in and around an airport, ship and the like. It may be portable or permanently attached and may include a housing, mounting plate, spring, cable(s), battery(ies), colored filter(s), lens(es), or a means for flashing signals. The lamp housing may include a pistol grip, trigger switch, aiming device, lamp(s), and the like.

LIGHT,GLIDE ANGLE,AIRPORT APPROACH

A light, with leveling arm, designed to project simultaneously three flat beams of different colored light to aid pilots in establishing the correct glide angle to an airstrip or runway.

LIGHT,MARKER,AIRCRAFT OBSTRUCTION

A light specifically designed to mark an obstruction or hazard to aircraft in motion. See also FIXTURE, LIGHTING.

LIGHT,MARKER,AIRPORT APPROACH

A light specifically designed to be used in conjunction with other similar items, to indicate the projection of a runway or landing strip.

LIGHT,BEACON

A light specifically designed to indicate a geographical location.

SUPPLEMENTARY EQUIPMENT,AIRCRAFT OPERATIONAL AREA LIGHT SET

A collection of various equipment and supplies, such as cable assembly, chests, wire rope clips, cones, lighting fixtures, incandescent lamps, electrical leads, lens, mast set, rack assembly, cable reels, guy stakes, strap assembly, transformers, and the like, designed to supplement LIGHT SET, OPERATIONAL AREA, AIRCRAFT.

LIGHT,MARKER,AIRPORT RUNWAY

A light specifically designed to be used in conjunction with other similar items to outline the runway areas of an airport. For battery operated items, see LIGHT, MARKER, GROUND OBSTRUCTION.

WINDOW,LIGHTING FIXTURE

An item of clear or diffusing material designed to be placed in front of, and which does not inclose, a light source. It is specifically designed to be used with a FIXTURE, LIGHTING. See also GLOBE, ELECTRIC LIGHT; FILTER, LIGHT (as modified) and LENS (as modified).

LIGHT SET,GENERAL ILLUMINATION

The items and components required to install and operate a lighting system. May include such items as a power source, cables, lighting fixtures and accessories. Do not use if a more specific item name exists.

CHEST,RUNWAY MARKER LIGHT LENS

A chest having a reinforced bottom, cover, edges, ends and side.

A brightly colored conical shaped item designed to show the location of an airport runway light during daylight hours.

A filter, specifically designed to be installed inside the lens of a LIGHT, BEACON. Excludes FILTER, SIGNAL LIGHT.

A light specifically designed to be used in conjunction with other similar items to mark a heading and indicate depth perception for aircraft ditching at night in the open ocean.

LIGHT SET,INDICATOR,MATCHED

A light set consisting of two or more separate indicator lights which have been matched together for a given characteristic such as circuit continuity indication. The indicator lights may include resistors for increasing and/or limiting the resistive value of the electric current.

LENS,LIGHT

A transparent or translucent item designed to enclose or be placed in front of a light source. Sections of the lens may be opaque. It may or may not include a holder. It is designed to be either a replacement unit for a specific type of light, such as LIGHT, INDICATOR&#59; LIGHT, NAVIGATIONAL, MARINE&#59; STOP LIGHT, VEHICULAR&#59; and LANTERN, ELECTRIC or that portion of a SWITCH, (as modified) used as an actuator and having provisions for illumination. LIGHT EMITTING DIODE

A two electrode, solid state, optoelectronic device that emits visible or infrared radiant energy when electrically energized. May or may not include mounting hardware and/or heat sink. Excludes LAMP, CARTRIDGE; and LIGHT, INDICATOR. For solid state devices which are responsive to infrared or radiant energy, see SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE (1), PHOTO.

CASE,LIGHT

FILTER,INDICATOR LIGHT

An item, other than a lens, specifically designed to be used with an indicator light for the purpose of altering the amount and/or color of light transmitted. May consist of more than one section with different colors, or it may consist of more than one layer of filters.

READOUT,INCANDESCENT,PROJECTION TYPE

A digital/numeric/character display illunimated by incandescent lamps projecting changeable messages through a series of light collecting, condensing, and projection lens onto a viewing screen. May include message film chip(s), a message storage medium, and color filter(s). Excludes READOUT, INCANDESCENT TYPE.

READOUT,INCANDESCENT TYPE

An alpha, digital/numeric, symbolic or combination thereof, display illuminated by direct view incandescent filaments. Sunlight/night vision goggle readable.May include color filter(s). Excludes READOUT, INCANDESCENT, PROJECTION TYPE.

LENS,CONDENSER,PROJECTION

A bubble surfaced transparent lens which acts to support a message film chip, magnify and direct light rays from the lens, light collecting, through the projection lens onto the viewing screen of a readout, incandescent, projection type.

LENS,LIGHT COLLECTING,PROJECTION

A bubble surfaced transparent lens designed to gather light rays from the light source and direct them through the lens, light condensing, of a readout, incandescent, projection type.

LIGHT UNIT,EMERGENCY

A self-contained item designed to provide minimal illumination required for personnel safety and evacuation purposes. One or more lamps are automatically energized by integral battery(ies) when normal electric power is interrupted. Upon restoration of electric power, built-in charger automatically recharges battery(ies). May include battery condition and/or charge indicating device(s). Excludes LIGHT SET, GENERAL ILLUMINATION.

LIGHT,WARNING

A light designed to be permanently or temporarily mounted or positioned on or near a movable/immovable object or obstruction to alert personnel of a dangerous, hazardous, or unusual condition or situation by automatically producing either repeated flashes of light or by rotation or oscillation of a light source. Excludes items with integral siren.

HOUSING,LIGHT

A housing designed to surround or enclose a LIGHT (1). It may provide mounting facilities for components and may be single or multiple piece construction. Designed to accommodate a lens and/or lamp which are not included. Excludes SHADE, LAMP.

INSERT,LEGEND,LIGHT INDICATOR

An item containing either words, numbers, symbols, letters, or a combination thereof, placed or inserted behind a lens of a LIGHT (1), INDICATOR.

DIFFUSER,LIGHT

An item specifically designed to diffuse light by defining the area, direction or amount of light generated by a light assembly of any type. Excludes, but may be used in conjunction with, LENS, LIGHT and FILTER, INDICATOR, LIGHT.

RETAINER,LAMP

An item primarily designed to position and/or restrain the movement of a lamp in a normal operating position. May include weather proofing and related hardware.

PANEL,ILLUMINATION

A glass or plastic panel designed to have photometric requirements and be an integral part of an electrical circuit providing illumination to an indicator assembly. The surface can be treated to react to electrical energy with illumination. Excludes all engraved panels. See PANEL, INDICATING, LIGHT TRANSMITTING.

BRACKET,LIGHT RETENTION

A rigid or group of rigid item(s) designed to position and/or restrain the movement of one or more light(s) and/or light units. May include mounting holes, screw threads, clips, or other fastening devices and electrical contacts.

FILTER,LIGHT,UTILITY

A trnasparent or translucent item designed to inclose or be placed in front of a light source such as LANTERN, ELECTRIC; LIGHT, NAVIGATIONAL, MARINE; or STOP LIGHT, VEHICULAR. Sections of the filter may be opaque and it may include a holder. Do not use if a more specific name applies.

REPAIR KIT,LANTERN-LIGHT

A repair kit consisting of electrical and/or mechanical parts and tools used for the maintenance and repair of lanterns and lights.

LIGHT SUBASSEMBLY,LIGHT INDICATOR

An item designed for replacement as a complete functional unit in a LIGHT (1), INDICATOR. It consists of parts such as enclosure for light, lens holder, filter, lens and diffuser.

ADAPTER,MOUNTING,AIRPORT LIGHT

An item designed to be used for mounting an illuminating fixture such as glide angle approach lights, and ground obstruction lights on stakes, cones, masts and the like at aircraft handling faclities.

LIGHTING KIT,MOTION DETECTOR

One or more light fixture(s) with accessories, and a sensor, that when assembled form a unit capable of illuminating a given area when a heat producing source moves into its field of vision. May include lamp(s), control module(s) and the like.

LENS SET,LIGHT

A collection of different LENS,LIGHT.

LIGHT KIT,AERIAL DELIVERY,DISPATCHING AND HELIPORTAGE

The collection of those identical and/or not identical items which are required to operate a lighting system which identify a given area with a view to using it by night, as an aerial delivery, dispatching and/or heliportage field. Excludes: LIGHT SET, OPERATIONAL AREA, AIRCRAFT.

MOUNTING SLEEVE,LIGHT,INDICATOR

A fixed, movable, or removable item, used to maintain a LIGHT, INDICATOR on the board.

INDICATOR,LIGHT

An item specifically designed to present a visual indication of the functioning of a light (1). Usually consists of a transparent or translucent plate or rod used to conduct the light rays beyond an obstruction. Does not include the light.

LIGHT SET,OPERATIONAL AREA,AIRCRAFT

The items and components required to operate a lighting system which delineates an aircraft landing field or segments thereof. It may include such items as power source, cables, and accessories.

PANEL,INDICATING,LIGHT TRANSMITTING

An item composed of a coated transparent or partly transparent/partly opaque materiels, engraved with letters, words and/or symbols, designed to allow light to be transmitted through the engraving(s) for indicating purposes. It may have an electrical lighting circuit either on a removable printed circuit board or embedded within the panel. The circuit may have removable or nonremovable electroluminescent and/or incandescent lamps for lighting. Dials and/or switches may be included. Excludes DISPLAY, OPTELECTRONIC. LAMP,LIGHT EMITTING DIODE

An electric light that uses one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs as the source of light.

AIRFIELD LIGHTING SYSTEM

A system which provides non-precision Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Visual Flight Rules (VFR) capability with visible and infrared lighting outputs using runway lights, taxiway lights, and glideslope guidance controlled anywhere on an airfield by handheld radio control, from an air traffic control tower, or from an aircraft, and powered by either solar, battery, or generator power. The number of runway lights and taxiway lights used varies with length of runway in accordance with local requirements.

LIGHT,PANEL

It must include reflector(s) and mounting facilities and may include accessories. Excludes items which can be adjusted to function as a SEARCHLIGHT or a SPOTLIGHT. SPOTLIGHT

LIGHT,BACKUP

A light specifically designed to be mounted on the rear of a vehicle to provide illumination for backing.

LIGHT,DOME

A light specifically designed to be mounted on the interior overhead area of a ground or air vehicle or a marine craft to provide general illumination of the interior. See also FIXTURE, LIGHTING.

LIGHT,FOG

A light designed to be mounted on a vehicle to provide illumination for operation under foggy and adverse weather conditions.

GUARD,LAMP

CONTROL,DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL LIGHT,AUTOMOTIVE

An item which, when manually actuated, completes, interrupts, or changes the connections in the electrical circuit to control the operation of the directional signal lights on an automotive vehicle. It may include flasher mechanism.

CASE,LIGHT SET

A case designed to hold a light set or a part thereof. See also CASE, LAMP.

LIGHT,RECOGNITION,AIRCRAFT

A light specifically designed to be permanently installed on aircraft to produce a steady or flashing signal for identification between aircraft in flight or between an aircraft in flight and a ground station.

LIGHT,TAXIING,AIRCRAFT

A light specifically designed to be installed on an aircraft to project a diffused beam of light to a limited area to facilitate taxiing on the ground or water during periods of darkness. See also LIGHT (1), LANDING, AIRCRAFT.

LIGHT,NAVIGATIONAL,AIRCRAFT

A light specifically designed to be mounted on an aircraft to indicate its position in motion or at rest and/or its direction of travel.

REFLECTOR,LIGHT

An opaque item for a light source with an inside surface of high polish or luster designed to confine, reflect and redirect light rays in a specific area or direction. Does not include lampholder. For combination guard and reflector, see GUARD, LAMP.

SEARCHLIGHT

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is designed to project a concentrated, high intensity beam of light to locate or identify distant objects, and for long range illumination. May include such items as integral controls, lenses, color filters and signaling shutters. Includes items which can be adjusted to function as a FLOODLIGHT, ELECTRIC. See also SPOTLIGHT; FLOODLIGHT, ELECTRIC and LIGHT, SIGNAL.

LIGHT,TRAFFIC,AIRCRAFT

A hand-held light specifically designed to project a beam of light, usually colored, for the prime purpose of regulating and directing airborne and ground aircraft traffic in and around an airport, ship and the like. DIRECTIONAL LIGHT,VEHICULAR

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is specifically designed to be installed on a ground vehicle to provide a warning signal indicating the direction in which the vehicle is to turn. Excludes STOP LIGHT-TAILLIGHT, VEHICULAR and LIGHT, PARKING.

STOP LIGHT-TAILLIGHT,VEHICULAR

An item which has the dual purpose of a STOP LIGHT, VEHICULAR and TAILLIGHT, VEHICULAR. Includes items which may be used for directional signaling.

TAILLIGHT,VEHICULAR

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is specifically designed to be installed on the rear of a ground vehicle to indicate its rear position. See also STOP LIGHT-TAILLIGHT, VEHICULAR.

LIGHT,MARKER,CLEARANCE

A light specifically designed to indicate clearance and/or the general outline of a ground vehicle.

LIGHT,PARKING

A light specifically designed to indicate the presence of a parked vehicle. Includes items which may be used for directional signaling.

STOP LIGHT,VEHICULAR

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is specifically designed to be installed on the rear of a ground vehicle to provide a visual warning signal indicating that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. It includes items which may be used for directional signaling. See also STOP LIGHT-TAILLIGHT, VEHICULAR.

FILTER,SPOTLIGHT

A filter designed to be used with a spotlight.

HEADLIGHT

An item conforming to LIGHT (1) which, when installed on a vehicle, projects a forward-focused beam of light to a limited area and facilitates operation during periods of darkness. The item must include provisions for mounting on a vehicle. Excludes LAMP (as modified).

LIGHT,COCKPIT,AIRCRAFT

A light specifically designed to be permanently installed in aircraft for map reading or cockpit illumination. It may contain dimming features, switches, filters, and/or cables or coiled cables to permit portability within the length of the cable. If provided with cables or coiled cables, the mounting base must remain fixed to the aircraft and include a snap-in or similar locking device to permit detachment and attachment of the light. For items that supply general illumination for other compartments of an aircraft, see LIGHT, DOME. Excludes LIGHT (1), EXTENSION.

LENS,LIGHT

A transparent or translucent item designed to enclose or be placed in front of a light source. Sections of the lens may be opaque. It may or may not include a holder. It is designed to be either a replacement unit for a specific type of light, such as LIGHT, INDICATOR&#59; LIGHT, NAVIGATIONAL, MARINE&#59; STOP LIGHT, VEHICULAR&#59; and LANTERN, ELECTRIC or that portion of a SWITCH, (as modified) used as an actuator and having provisions for illumination. SPOTLIGHT

SEARCHLIGHT GROUP

An item which conforms to Light (1), with integral battery container or integral source of power, designed to be normally held in the hand or attached to a weapon to project a beam of light. Does not include an integral handle, but may include a means of carrying such as a clip, ring, or strap. The lens and/or reflecting surface may be part of the lamp. LANTERN,ELECTRIC

An item consisting of one or more lamp accommodations and integral or separate battery container, normally designed to be hand-carried and to project illumination. It must include an integral handle, however, may have provisions for mounting or strapping to the body or clothing or to poles, rods or like objects. A component which determines the mode of operation of a searchlight.

An item which conforms to Light (1), and is designed to project a concentrated, high intensity beam of light to locate or identify distant objects, and for long range illumination. LAMP,MERCURY VAPOR

An item which produces light by an electric arc between two electrodes in an ionized mercury vapor atmosphere.

LAMP,FLUORESCENT

An item which produces light due to an ionized gas activating a fluorescent coating.

LAMP,GLOW

An item in which a gas is ionized to produce light energy of low persistence. It may include internal current limiting resistor.

CASE,LAMP

A case specifically designed to hold one or more lamps.

LAMP,CARTRIDGE

An item consisting of an unbased lamp, either incandescent or glow, mounted in a sleeve. It has a projecting terminals and may also include a lens. For light emitting diodes which may or may not be mounted in a sleeve or a lamp base, see LIGHT EMITTING DIODE.

LAMP,HOLLOW CATHODE

A gas discharge lamp which emits radiation in the form of a cathode glow from a hollow cathode closed at one end. It is usually used in atomic absorption spectrophotometers.

LAMP,SODIUM

An item which produces light by an electric arc between two electrodes in an ionized sodium vapor atmosphere.

LAMP,XENON

An item which produces light by an electric arc between two electrodes in an ionized xenon gas atmosphere. See also LAMP, GLOW. Excludes LAMP, FLASHTUBE.

LAMP,METAL HALIDE

An item in which the major portion of the light is produced by radiation of metal halides and their products of dissociation - possibly in combination with metallic vapors such as mercury. Includes clear and phosphor coated lamps. Excludes LAMP, MERCURY VAPOR.

LAMP ASSEMBLY

Two or more lamps having a common mounting or mounted on each other. It may include resistors, contacts, printed circuits or other components that control the lamps only.

LAMP,CONCENTRATED ARC

An item that produces a small, brilliant spot of light 0.005 to 0.110 inches (0.0002 to 0.0043 millimeters) in diameter, depending on wattage, by a low voltage arc between two non-vaporizing electrodes in an atmosphere of inert gas.

HOLDER,LAMP

An item primarily designed to mechanically accomodate, position, and/or restrain the movement of one or more lamps in its/their normal mounting position. For items specifically designed to electrically accommodate a lamp, see LAMPHOLDER.

LAMP ASSORTMENT

A collection of lamps with different characteristics that is usually contained in a CASE (2), LAMP. It is intended for individual replacement and/or general use.

LAMP,ELECTROLUMINESCENT PANEL

An item that when connected to an alternating current/direct current source emanates light from crystalline powders or phosphors sandwiched between electrically conductive surfaces, one of which is translucent. The powders absorb the electrical energy and convert it instantly into light with minimal heat, without the use of ballasts, starters, or other auxillary electrical equipment.

LAMP,LIGHT EMITTING DIODE

An electric light that uses one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs as the source of light.

STARTER,FLUORESCENT LAMP

An item consisting of a switch assembled in a case with terminals or contacts, specially designed to initially actuate the mercury arc in a fluorescent lamp. It may include a capacitor.

LAMPHOLDER RECEPTACLE

An item specifically designed to electrically and mechanically accommodate lampholders such as Lumiline and series street lighting types which are not designed for direct connection to the associated wiring.

SOCKET,LAMP STARTER

A socket designed to accommodate electrically and mechanically a fluorescent lamp starter. For a fitting designed for both lamp and starter, see LAMPHOLDER.

BRACE,LAMPHOLDER

An item which is an auxiliary mechanical or structural part of a lampholder. The removal of the brace does not affect the space relationship of the lampholder with respect to its mounting. It is not intended to be the principal resistive or supporting member.

A source of light produced by the action of a radioactive gas such as krypton or tritium on a phosphor contained in a sealed transparent capsule. The item is self-contained requiring no external power source. It continues to emit light for an indefinite period and cannot be extinguished.
